2017 Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship
The national volleyball team of Iran in the 19th Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship is seeking for their sixth medal.
The national volleyball men of Iran obtained their first medal in bronze in 2003. They crowned the Asian Championship in 2011 & 2013.
Two silver medals in 2009 & 2015 are of the other achievements of Iran in Asian Championship. Iran will have his young squad of U23 men this year in 2017 in Indonesia, Surabaya.
19th Asian Championship
The 19th Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship will take place from July 24 to August 1 in Surabaya of Indonesia. The preliminary round is from Monday to Wednesday with 24 matches. The guys of Juan Cichello will compete in pool B against Chinese Taipei, Pakistan, and Iraq.
Seeding of Preliminary Round:
Pool A: Indonesia, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia
Pool B: Iran, Chinese Taipei, Pakistan, Iraq
Pool C: Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka
Pool D: Australia, China, Thailand, Hong Kong
Japan with the Most Medals
The Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship dates back to 1975 and has already been performed for 18 editions. The tournament was first held every four years (1979, 1983, 1987) and then was changed to every two years since 1989.
In the last 18 editions, only six countries have taken the podium with Japan as the most honorable team with 8 championships, 3 vice-championships, and 3 bronze medals that is 14 medals overall.
In terms of the number of the medals, South Korea with 16 medals holds the highest record with 4 championships, 4 vice-championships, and 8 bronze medals.
China is the third honorable team of Asia with 3 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
Iran is ranked the fourth best team of Asia with 2 gold (2011 & 2013), 2 silver (2009 & 2015) and 1 bronze medal (2003). Australia with 1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal is statistically the fifth team of Asia.
Kazakhstan with 1 bronze medal is the sixth and the last medal-holder of Asia. The number is not that much with the fact that those have experienced participating in this tournament reach to 38 Asian & Oceanic teams.
Australia, China, South Korea and Japan are the only Asian teams with the full participation in all editions While Chinese Taipei, India, and Iran with 16 participation each have stood on the second rank.
In terms of the number of participating teams in Asian Men’s Sr. Championship, the first edition took place in 1975 with seven teams in Australia. It reaches to 21 teams in 2013. Asian Volleyball Confederation has decided to change to 16 since 2015.
Iran, Australia & South Korea each with Three Hosting
Twelve countries have already hosted the last 18 editions of Asian Championship among which Iran, Australia, and South Korea each equally shared 3 hosting while Thailand made it twice. Indonesia, Qatar, Kuwait, China, Philippine, Bahrain, and UAE all recorded once.
Indonesia will host this tournament for the second time make it tie with Thailand hence.
A Snapshot at the last 16 presence of Iran in Asian championship
The national volleyball men of Iran have made his first presence in 1979 when it was the second edition of it and finished the sixth in his first attendance.
Iran was absent just in two editions in 1975 (1st edition) and 1983 (3rd edition). In 1987, Iran finished the tenth while made it 8th & 7th in 1989 & 1991. The senior men of Iran achieved the sixth in 1979, 1997, and 2005 while gaining the fifth in 1993, 1999, 2001, 2007. In 1995, Iran failed the battle for the bronze medal and earned the fourth place.
Iranian men made advancements in recent years from 2003 with bronze medal to 2009 & 2015 with vice-championship to the championship in 2011 & 2013.
Iran is taking part with his U23 men in this edition, still seeking to claim championship. The national U23 men of Iran crowned the championship this year in Ardabil and earned the berth for the World Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship in Cairo. The Asian arena can be a preparatory stage to fully perform in Egypt.
The team B of Iran finished the second in the 18th Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship in 2015 when Payman Akbari coaching the team.
Japan, Iran, China, Qatar, Australia, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Oman, and Turkmenistan respectively conquered the first 16 places in 2015.
