A look at the history of the highest level of Iranian men’s competition
Examining the history of these competitions shows that the first round of Iranian club volleyball championships was held in 1975 under the name of “Pasargad Cup” with the participation of 12 teams.
Mahmoud Chaichi, Aziz Partovi, Qasem Tavakoli, Manouchehr Akhshtin, Hamid Shaltukchi, Amir Heydari, Vadud Gogani, Nader Pakrou and Sadeq Amiri were among the players of the Dokhanyat team in this competition.
This tournament was followed in 1976 with 12 teams and in 1977-1978 with 10 teams with the same name and periodically, and Tehran’s Esteghlal team under the guidance of Farough Fakhredini won the championship in both seasons.
Mustafa Zoghi, Ahmed Pourkashian, Mehdi Saberpour, Rasool Awaazi, Hassan Shamshiri, Mohsen Nakhie, Ali Tazeruni, Majid Argi and Reza Ghahveie were among the players of the Esteghlal Tehran team in these two tournaments.
After the victory of the Islamic revolution and Iraq’s attack on our country (imposed war), the Iranian volleyball league was not held for 12 years until the fourth round of these competitions was held periodically in 1990 with the participation of 10 teams. At that time, the tournament was named “Iran Volleyball League One “, which was the highest level of this sport in the country.
The team of Bonyad Shahid became the champion in the resumption of these competitions under the guidance of Mehdi Saberpour and Hossein Pouretemadi, who also won the championship title for the second time in 1991.
Since 1990, when these competitions started again after a 12-year hiatus, these competitions continued for seven years under the name of Iran Volleyball League One, until in 1997, the volleyball championship of Iran’s top clubs (Volleyball Premier League) was launched. And it has continued continuously until now.

33% increase in audience capacity
This year, despite the reduction of one team from among those present in the Premier League competitions, more spectators have the opportunity to watch their team’s matches in the hall, because due to the increasing popularity of volleyball among the people, the clubs are trying to build and renovate larger halls in the last year and we see competitions held in halls of 6 and 7 thousand people.
It is said that Sepharsadra Mashhad team is trying to hold its home matches in Shahid Beheshti Hall, which has a capacity of seven thousand people, and if this request is implemented, the average audience capacity of the 2024 Volleyball Premier League will increase to 33%, which will be a significant statistic. Currently, Sepehr club is equipping this 7,000-seat hall with the best facilities and will hold its first three matches in the 1,500 seat Mehran Hall until the largest hall in the Premier League of Volleyball is ready for operation.
Chadormelo Ardakan, which last year had a hall with a capacity of 1500 people in its home games, this year with the construction and equipping of the Shahid Soleimani Hall, which has a capacity of 6 thousand people, has increased the size of its audience by 4500 people, so that the numerous spectators of Yazd province have more space to watch the attractive sport of volleyball. A hall that, in addition to standard flooring, has also worked professionally in lighting to be another rival hall for holding world championships.
Shahrdari Urmia is another Premier League team that will host 6,000-person fans in Ghadir Hall. Although this hall is not newly established, it has the necessary standards for holding international events and last year it hosted the Asian Men’s Championship.
Shahdab Yazd has created a capacity of three thousand people in Yazd for volleyball fans by equipping and renovating its own hall (previously known as Shahdieh). A hall that recently hosted Asian men’s club competitions and has the necessary standards for holding competitions.
According to the statistics announced by the league organization regarding the capacity of the halls of the Premier League teams, the total capacity of the halls in 2024 is 46,500 people, which will be an average of 3,576 people for each hall, while last year’s figure of 14 teams in the league There were 37,500 people in the Premier League, which averaged 2,678 spectators for each hall, and this statistic indicates a 33.5% increase in the average capacity of the Premier League spectators.
